It has been a month since Destiny launched with great success. Has this new franchise lived up to the hype or is it just another first person shooter? Most of us here at The Gamers Lounge have logged some time with the game and here is our thoughts.
Fall has become the season for gamers. Publishers hold their big name titles until fall in preparation for the Christmas rush. While 2014 has seen many AAA titles delayed until next year, there are still plenty of great games that will be out very soon. Here are some of the games The Gamers Lounge staff are looking forward to.
At The Gamers Lounge both John and Erik both bought PS4. They both take time to set down and give a mini review of the system and the state of the PS4 four months after launch.
We have reached a milestone. We have reached the 1 year anniversary of being a gaming website and we have reached 50 episodes of our podcast. We decided we should do a giveaway to give back to the community. Here's how to enter and what you might win
It's been a little over a year since Goozex closed its doors. One of the greatest trading sites available on the Internet saw the site sputter and die as it tried to climb back to its former glory. The members of the Gamer’s Lounge takes time to reflect on the Goozex experience and what it meant then and now.
The crew of The Gamer’s Lounge has gotten together and discussed our game of the year picks. To some of us, our GOTY candidates were epic 60 hour RPGs, for others it was new IPs destined to change the face of gaming, and for some of us our choices were games that flew under the radar. 2014 was truly a great year for gaming for every platform.
The Gamer’s Lounge Crew has put together a list of what they are hoping to pick up for Black Friday. Along the way, they are mentioning the “must buy” deals for video games on Black Friday, as well as which store has the best deal for consoles or the new AAA games.

Back in September we announced the release of MaxLander The worlds first NFC backup for Skylanders. Now those same folks have just announced NaMiiO, a USB backup device for you Amiibo. What sets this one apart from N2Elite (formally Amiiqo) is that it is PC compatible, no phone needed, and the software has a fully built in cheat system to instantly max out your Amiibo.
To say Skylanders is a hit for Activision is like saying that fish like water. As of February 2015, the Skylanders franchise has had over $3 billion in sales and sold over 250 million toys. This fall the fifth installment of the game will be released, Skylanders: Superchargers and along with the game, a whole new collection of toys and accessories. For some, they have to collect them all, others only new characters, but what if there was a way to have your entire collection at the touch of a button? Well, thanks to MaxLander there is.
It is safe to say that Nintendo has scored big with the Amiibo's. Most are very hard to find, some are impossible. Flippers have really cashed in by taking advantage of the short supply and high demand, selling certain figures upwards of 10x their MSRP. Let's not forget about multi-child households having to buy multiples of each figure so each child can have their own figure. What if there was a way to not have to buy two of every figure, but also have all of them at your fingertips, their stats and data on one convenient device that works on your 3DS and Wii U? Enter the Amiiqo.
Sony's new TV service, PlayStation Vue launched this week in three markets, New York, Philadelphia and Chicago. If you don’t live in one of those metropolitan areas you are out of luck for now...or are you? Here at The Gamers Lounge John has discovered that even though he lives 600 miles away from the closest city, he has been able to sign up for the service and use it. Want to know how? Read on to find out!
Nintendo has never been number one on my must have gaming console list. I have been a SEGA man since the Master System days, then an Xbox guy after the Dreamcast faded away. But recently with all the bickering between XB1 and PS4 fanboys about resolution of games, graphics and game length, I have found myself playing less. Maybe I was just reading too much social media or maybe I hit the Destiny bottle too hard. But for whatever reason I wasn't having that much fun, I was just going through the motions. But that changed last month when I picked up the New 3DS XL.
In November 2013, Darren Wall began a Kickstarter to fund the ultimate documentary art book to celebrate 25 years of the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis. In less than 48 hours, he had reached his goal of £30,000 ($47,000). By the time the Kickstarter ended on December 9th, over 2,000 backers had pledged £98,000 ($154,000) to the project. Published by Read Only Memory, this collected works is not only the definitive history of the Mega Drive/Genesis, but the best book about video games I have ever seen.
This year marks the 15th anniversary of the SEGA Dreamcast in the US and EU. The Dreamcast scene over the past few years has seen a resurgence of sorts. With new independent games coming out and advancements in modes for the system it has helped make the Dreamcast a desirable system to have again. Who could have thought that a system that with such a short production life would still be around and kicking for so long.
Starting today Maingear, award winning makers of high-performance custom PCs, is announcing that the new NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 and GTX 980 graphics cards, now available on all MAINGEAR desktops. The GTX 980 is the flagship for the GeForce 900 series and is the fastest Maxwell card to launch in the market.
July is always a slow month for new releases in video games. In 2013 shortly after releasing NCAA 14 EA announced the NCAA had ended its deal with EA due to lawsuits with former players. Then in October EA and Tiger Woods part ways and rumors quickly spread that EA was losing exclusive rights to the NFL as well. EA Sports seems to have been kick around the past 12 months and with sales starting to drop. Is it time for leagues to stop exclusive rights and allow other publishers to start making sports titles again or has EA ruined it for everyone?
The Gamers Lounge is taking part in the 3rd Annual 8-bit Salute for Operation Supply Drop, a charity to fill video game care packages for our troops deployed in combat zones as well as those recovering in military hospitals, and we need your help.
Another month is in the books and one more rambling for this month. This week John talks Assassins Creed, The Last of Us, Games with Gold, PS+ and more!
This week John rambles about Metal Gear, inFamous, Assassins Creed, Shenmue one more time and more!
So this June marks the 70th anniversary of D-Day and it has been a while since a good story driven WWII game has been released. Is this the year game makers should return to 1944?
This week John rambles on about Titanfall, inFamous, Metal Gear, Shenmue again and more!
It seems in this next gen more than ever Microsoft and Sony want gamers to buy into the digital age of games. As more and more gamers jump onboard it begs the question. What happens to my digital games at the end of a console's life when online for that system is shut down?
There were a few big announcements this week the video game world and this weekend John sets down to once again share his thoughts about them.
Larry “Major Nelson” Hyrb announced early this morning that starting next week if you purchase an Xbox One at select retailers you get a copy of Forza 5 for free. With this news coming out just days before Titanfall’s release people on the internet have shown a range of emotion but the real question is does this make you want to grab an Xbox One?
In this weeks edition John rants about Titanfall, Twitch, Sega (again) and more!
Week number two of the month and this week we go off on SEGA, again, fuss about not getting in the Titanfall beta, birthday memories and more!
Every weekend John from The Gamers Lounge sets down to share his thoughts and rant about what catches his eye in the way of video game news. Lets see what he has to say this week

Another fall has come and gone and as we move into 2025 its time to reflect on last years Portland Retro Gaming Expo aka PRGE. This year PRGE was focusing on the year 1994 with some interesting exhibits and some great guest panels. One cannot forget the vendor hall and freeplay area. Overall the biggest question was how was the selection and prices?
Portland Retro Gaming Expo continues to be one of the best places to hunt for retro games. This year with the layout changes there were more opportunities to see and play the games from yesterday. The biggest questions this year were what were the prices like? Were there any unique pieces or odd historical gaming items?
Portland Retro Gaming Expo (PRGE) finally came back to Portland in October 2022. The show hadn't happened in over 2 years mostly due to the pandemic. Join Erik from The Gamers Lounge as he ventured into the large convention searching for the goods. Will the prices be high? Will there be a mad rush to get Mario 3 CIB?

Outside of 2018 I did a great job of reporting back what I found at yard sales. Although I didn't write much on this particular topic in 2018-2020 I did have some luck. Here is a look back in 2018 at a few of the interesting things I found yard saleing.

Pokémon Go is immensely popular everywhere. People all over the world are playing it anywhere they can. Nintendo’s stock has climbed due to the success. The game is easy to pick up and play for anyone. With this much initial success, will this game pave the way for other Nintendo games to come to mobile? Will this change how big gaming companies look at mobile gaming? Is there is going to be something that changes gaming forever?

The last few weeks have been buzzing with more tragic news concerning gamers’ buying options. The apparent news is that the brick and mortar store Hastings is in serious financial trouble. Hasting is known for selling comics, video games, collectibles, dvds, music, and books. They often have good sales on used games. If this truly is the last gasp of breath for this store, will gamers get to see fantastic clearance deals? What was the final nail in the coffin?

Skylanders, Lego Dimensions, Disney Infinity, Nintendo’s Amiibos have all filled this niche. The bigger question reminds is this the slow decline of the popularity across the genre?

Since I am always mentioning Minecraft on the Gamers Lounge podcast yet rarely have time to write anything for the site, I have decided to start posting my Minecraft videos here on The Gamers Lounge whenever I put them up on Youtube. This way you can keep up with what I am doing in the game whenever I talk about it on the show.
A new preview build for Minecraft 1.8 came out earlier this week. While Minecraft Snapshot 14w27b can be summed up as "they added rabbits", there is actually quite a bit more to this new build than first meets the eye.
The Minecraft 1.8 update will bring many changes and additions to the game, but one change is just a little more special than the others.
Attack of the B-Team is a pack of mods for Minecraft chosen by two Minecraft YouTube personalities, BDoubleO100 and GenerikB, known as the B-Team in some of their videos. The pack is available through the Technic Platform, creators of previous modpacks such as Tekkit and Hexxit. According to Technic, Attack of the B-Team "was designed with one thing in mind, crazy mad science! With the help of the B-Team we hand picked the wackiest mods we could find and shoved them all in a modpack for you guys."
In this video, we take a walkthrough tour of the Kompany 008 village, somewhere in the wilderness on the Minedlands PVE Server (Player versus Environment).
There are many aspects to Minecraft that make it appealing to such a wide audience. It taps into many areas that most other games don't bother with. The biggest aspect of Minecraft that I think is the major reason it became so popular and continues to sell copy after copy is player creativity. Minecraft allows and encourages players to tap into their creative sides in many different ways.
You might have figured out that I am paraphrasing a famous wizard with the above statement. As those of you who have read The Hobbit will know, Gandalf introduces himself to Bilbo in this fashion at the beginning of the novel. I figured there was no better way to introduce myself at The Gamers Lounge (and describe where my username/gamertag comes from) than to borrow from arguably the best wizard to ever grace the pages of a book.

Record of Agarest War is a PS3/Xbox 360 title that has been revamped and brought to the Nintendo Switch. Featuring a unique hook where there are multiple generations and who you court changes the stats of the next protagonist, the title does struggle with a bog-down of features to where it’s hard to pay attention to them all, especially when “stand still and whack things” seems to work so easily at the beginning.
God Wars: Future Past was released last year for PlayStation 4 and Vita. The Complete Legend releases September 4th for Nintendo Switch and contains the Labyrinth of Yomi DLC which releases day and date for PS4/Vita. Given review of such a long game doesn’t allow you to see every inch of endgame content, Ryan Johnson at The Gamer’s Lounge was able to speak with Yoshimi Yasuda, director of God Wars, and found that the new content is more than expected.
Seedi is a retro emulation device that has a few days left on its Indiegogo campaign, and is in need of about half of it's funds. As an easy way to play classic CD based games, the Seedi stands out as a good chance to experience some early disc-based classics with some extra modern love options baked in.
Night Trap is a classic in the annals of video game history as one of the titles that brought about the ESRB ratings we all see on the boxes of our games today. Ryan brings back Episode 4 of the Evolution of a Gamer series to commemorate it's return and introduce a new crew of readers to the important life lessons he learns whilst teaching his sons about his favorite hobby.
In Episode 3 of the original Evolution of a Gamer series, Ryan teaches his son how to overcome some difficult boss enemies, whilst learning the parental skill of building encouragement and confidence in his young gamer son.
Rebooting his 2010 Evolution of a Gamer series for a new crew of readers at the Gamer's Lounge, Ryan pulls up the second in his archive of articles where he teaches his son about gaming, and learns something about life in the process. Here, Ryan learns a valuable lesson in trust when his son figures out how to save data on his DS.
Back when I wrote for a site that is no longer with us, I wrote this series, Evolution of a Gamer. With the site now defunct, it has disappeared from the internet. This was one of my favorite series of articles to write, where I teach my kids about video games and learn a little bit about real life myself in the process. I've decided to resurrect the series, because I've still had plenty of life lessons with my kids, but want new readers to be able to catch up. Over the next few weeks, I'll be posting the previous articles to get you up to speed. Without further ado, here's Episode 1, from way back in 2010! We'll catch up soon.

Squids: Odyssey came out for the Wii U a few weeks ago, and I was fortunate enough to review it. Now, The Game Bakers have offered me the chance to see the 3DS edition as well. In Europe, gamers who picked up the 3DS edition can get the Wii U version free, but this offer has not extended out of that territory. Gamers in other nations at the moment need to choose, but which one should you pick up?
Curve Studios has been around for a while, and while it isn't a huge studio, it's pedigree is one that makes this reviewer know that whatever they put out guarantees a great time.

Nintendo holds it's digital rights extremely tight in this modern age of digital gaming. Changing systems requires a full wipe of the previous system, and usually a brand new system to transfer to. However, one specific loophole has been found. While it may not fit your particular situation, this is a handy bit of information that could help you in future purchase decisions.
The String Arcade released on February 11th, and offers gamers a chance to see a new take on some of their favorite games' soundtracks. After a successful Kickstarter campaign, The String Arcade is looking to capture the heartstrings of the gaming public via the strings of a violin. Pulling from almost every era of video gaming, you will hear Galaga, Zelda, Ecco, Sonic, Minecraft, and others, arranged for a string quartet.

Although Monolith's adventure into Mordor was well recieved amongst most critics for it's impressive gameplay, the lack of a deep storyline left me struggling to make it through the game. Is it fair to give a game high review ratings simply based on gameplay, or have gamers' standards lowered enough so that a story no longer matters?

Growing up, if I was called a nerd, it was an insult that had to be refuted. I always needed a quick retort to save face, which still helped me to appear cool with the ladies. The truth was different. I spent my evenings at a friend’s house drawing maps of Zelda dungeons, searching the couch for quarters that I could spend at the arcade, and trying to beat Mike Tyson into submission. I never knew at the time that as a nerd I would get the last laugh, and that I would get revenge in a way I could never imagine.
2015 has been filled with so many great games. From AAA titles like Super Mario Maker and Fallout 4 to small independent titles like Rocket League and SOMA. It was very hard for the staff to pick just one clear winner for our Game of the Year and looking ahead at what there is to come in 2016, next year will be even harder.
