Sniper Elite is a fun series of games. Zombie Army Trilogy takes the best part of the Sniper Elite and adds the undead. What's not to like about this idea? Who doesn't want to kill zombies?
The game has players thrust into World War II around 1945. Seems like a common theme for the series. Germany has been up to some bad experiments and there are zombies. To me this played like a cross between COD Zombies and Left 4 Dead. The maps are big like Left 4 Dead but you can get overwhelmed quickly.
The Sniper Elite series of games has always had some interesting weapons. Zombie Trilogy doesn't disappoint in this field. There are plenty of weapons to pick from, primary and secondary. Most of the primary are a variety of rifles, most with scopes. Secondary weapons include a shotgun, a few different machine guns etc. There are also options for a last desperation pistol. Regular mines, trip mines, and dynamite add to the fun. Most of the time I was running from zombies and dropping mines or attempting to create choke points with trip mines.
Sniping is good but there really isn't cover, players will spend most of the time moving. Sometimes players can get to good vantage points and this works for a bit. Other times I ran into sections where there isn't time to aim. Just shoot, hope for a kill and go. The game is mostly fair, there are plenty of checkpoints and safe rooms. There are 15 levels clocking in at about 14-16 hours.
As the games have highlighted, the Sniper Elite games are known for the fun kill cam moments. Headshots, limb shots, the camera zooms in and it's fun, nothing like following the trajectory of the bullet as it hits 2-3 zombies. This never got old and is oddly satisfying.
FYI this game can be pretty tough solo, it's best to play with a friend if you can. I had to replay a few sections due to struggling solo. Most of the time in the beginning of the levels you can hang back and snipe. Even though it's been a while since this game was released, there are some fun Switch features. Wireless co-op with 4 buddies, players cannot go wrong with that. Horde mode and the multiplayer are fun pieces of the game as well. The framerate of the game holds steady during multiplayer matches even when the campaign gets a screen full of zombies.
While there isn't a lot to the story, the game is still fun and the Switch release a great way to play this game. Thanks to the publisher for letting us review it.
