Scott Pilgrim is back with a bang. The sequel to 2010 vs The World is here. There are not enough good things I can say about this game or the series in general. If you are a fan of brawlers, or enjoyed the first game, EX is well worth playing.
Scott’s bandmates are abducted by a shadowy force and it's up to Scott along with 3 other players to track down what has happened. There is cross play and drop in/out co-op which is something that the original game didn't have (it had multiplayer).
Combat is built around combos and each of the 7 characters has a different fighting style and special attacks. There is Scott and Ramona Flowers from the first game. We get the new characters of Gideon, Lucas Lee, Matthew Patel, Roxie Ritchter, and Robot-01. Outside of the Robot the other 4 were villains from the first game. At the character select screen and later the swap screen (you change mid game) each character has a different fighting style. Lee is a giant wrestler and plays very differently from the others. Patel has magic based attacks and his fighting style is puppeteer. Gideon is known as a pressure. Roxie is a Ninja and Robot is a zoner. Scott is all rounder and Ramona is mid range. Players can tinker with each character and find the style they like. I found myself trying everyone but Lee or the Robot, probably used Scott, Gideon (his reach is good) and the Ninja the most.
Scott and his friends will battle through space and time and downtown Toronto. There are hidden areas and secrets to discover. Gear and food can be bought, all gear and assist attacks can be swapped from player to player. Some of the gear boosts defense and life or attack. There are also badges which give you things such as auto blocking, coins are worth more, weapons last longer etc. Difficulty can be adjusted on the fly too which is handy. Players might find themselves grinding a little bit but the map is easy to use and the game never feels overwhelming.
Controls are fluid and work great with a controller. It's easiest to pull off combos and block/parry if players chose to play like that. I just usually go for as much damage as possible. The audio is full of great music and sound effects and the art style is so colorful and fun. I think the game is maybe 6-8 hrs long but there is plenty for gamers to come back and do.
Limited Run Games had physical copies to order, Amazon still does .
