Do you like Tetris and magic? Match games and monsters with an RPG twist? Welcome to Puzzle Quest Immortal Edition, a fun modern take on the classic match 3 game!
Puzzle Quest games were all the rage on the DS and PSP at one time. Players select a hero like Blood Mage, Rogue, Swordmaster, Warlock, Paladin, etc. Players are tasked with questing, battling and finding loot, all on a gem loaded board with some overland travel. The overland stuff is mostly for players to travel from place to place, get new gear, quests and the occasional story to go with the game.
The Puzzle board makes up the bulk of the game. Players need to match gems to damage their opponents, get bonuses to boost attacks, and then use their specials. Special attacks and spells are learned as players level. Killer combos are the best, match 4 or 5 and away you go. I can also recommend having some sort of healing skill handy, which saved me a few times with the harder bosses.
The game has its classical fantasy music to keep players entertained, and seems to remind me of Heroes of Might and Magic 3. As players earn exp and gold, they can level up their skills for different attacks, magic, and defense, this all works together with the kind of gem bonuses and matchmaking players get during battles. Gold can be spent on items such as weapons and trinkets, this along with skills can help shape players’ playstyle. Do you just clear the board of gems, or put together a combo to damage your opponent or do you just try to block them? If a player gets stuck on a battle (I did a few times) I just needed to grind a little and get my skills up and rethink my strategy.
Outside of the battles there is content from Challenge of the Warlords, Revenge of the Plague Lord, etc. Think of the Immortal edition as the complete edition. More sidequest and extra modes. The Citadel adds even more things, lets players construct buildings and research magic and forging items.
Overall there is a lot of content in this game and for $15 players cannot go wrong. This makes me want to track down the earlier versions on the Wii or DS and give them a play. I also look forward to playing this on the Steam Deck when I travel.
Big thanks to the developer for letting us review this game.
