Prepare to smash robots and customize the loadout! Megabyte Punch has come to Switch. It seems to blend Smash Bros and Megaman. There seems to be a lot to this game and the Gamers Lounge has spent some time with it.
This game has just been released on Switch, but it's been out on PC since 2013. Players are cast as a generic robot in a colorful blocky environment. Every enemy you beat drops bits and parts. The parts let you customize your loadout, arms, legs, chest, shoulders, head, everything. Drill for a hand and huge blocky head that lets players double jump? Players have 4 ability slots besides their base attack. This can be taken up by another attack, a flight ability, something where players can jump.
Physics like what games have seen in Smash Bros play a big role in combat. Players can bounce enemies off ceilings and walls and use cliffs and environment pitfalls to their advantage. Boss fights are interesting and each of them have a cool themed weapon like in Megaman. These unique items will help players progress from level to level. I was flying and gliding, sliding and upcutting enemies. I also enjoyed blasting them from a distance. Wings and a jet pack make exploration easy. Stages are broken down in 2-3 levels and a boss fight.
Between levels players can keep customizing their robot. The bad news is the equipment you have in your inventory at the end of the stage disappears. You only get to keep what's equipped. Good news, back in the village, you can go to your house and re-craft and requip all the items you have picked up. There are plenty of checkpoints in levels and players shouldn’t have to worry about dying too much, but if you run out of lives it's back to the beginning of the level.
The game has decent controls, very tight with the pro controller. Sound effects were a nice electronic soundtrack. Pleasantly, I was more interested in this game than I thought it would be. It might have been the combination of exploration, Megaman bits and the boss fights that reminded me of Smash. This game has a lot to offer and is well worth the purchase.
Big thanks to the publisher for letting us review it.
