Shmups have been around since the early days of gaming. They take a special gamer with unique set of skills. Ghost Blade is going to need these skills, join The Gamers Lounge as we play Ghost Blade HD and ask the question is it worth a purchase?
Ghost Blade HD lets potential players pick from 3 different ships and right away the game dumps into fast paced action. There is not an easy stage one. Players are going to have to shoot, bomb, dodge, and move. This is a cycle that is repeated in every stage. There are five levels and gamers with skills can complete this in 20 mins. Enemies come from the top and the bottom of the screen. Some of them have patterns and some don’t, this was something that created a problem for me. Players are going to have to pay attention and focus on every incoming bullet or laser. I found myself trying to get too many power ups and that's what usually killed me. Bombs are very useful in Ghost Blade, I used them to clear out parts of the screen. Boss fights aren’t bad and there is a semi-generous continue system.
There are a few more options in Ghost Blade. Gamers can change their hud, swap the screen position, all while listening to a pulse pounding electronic soundtracks. There is a training mode which lets players take on bosses for fun.
But in the end Ghost Blade HD’s 3 ships are much the same. There isn't much to the story and the bosses end up being very dull after the first few. Ghost Blade HD does have co-op which offers some additional fun for a little bit. While the game has a lot of potential it falls short in a few areas. There isn’t a lot of content or variety in this game. I enjoy Shmups but it's hard to recommend this game to everyone. If you are a fan of these games the $10 price point isn't too bad. Ghost Blade HD has been released on PS4, Wii U, Steam, and Xbox One.
