Toaplan Shooters Collector’s Edition

Toaplan shooters on the Sega Genesis have always been held in high regard as some of the best shooters of the 80’s and 90’s. For collectors, the Sega Genesis releases are some of the most expensive games on the system and the most sought after. Retro-Bit has re-released four of Toaplan shooters Truxton, Hellfire, Fire Shark and the unreleased in North America, Zero Wing. They were gracious enough to send over the collector’s edition for me to take a look and review. Let’s check out what you get.

The set comes in a very nice black slip case that reminds you of VHS collections from the 80’s. Graphics and logos from the game’s cover art on the sides and each game is in its own slip cover that, when stored in the case, makes the Toaplan logo in embossed silver. As I stated, each game has its own slipcover that has art from the game and is in glossy color. The game itself comes in a hard shell case just like any Genesis game. You are presented with the cover art from the original release on the front with pictures and description of the game on the back. The cover is reversible with the Japanese release art on the other side. The printing is excellent and very high quality.

Inside each case you find the game cartridge. It will be a translucent color, each game is different, with a label with full color art and logo embossed with silver trim. The chips are of high quality and have rounded edges, so they will go in and out of your system smoothly with no issues. Included in the case, is a full color instruction manual in English and Japanese. It is great to see them include a manual that has glossy pages and is full color with screenshots and art throughout. Also included is a set of game specific puffy stickers, as well as an envelope with an art work card, an interview with Masahiro Yuge about the game and a certificate of authenticity. Included with the set is a Zero Wings Pin and a thank you note from Masahiro Yuge and Tatsuya Uemura.

Overall, this is a wonderful collectors edition. The set is very high quality and worth the $160 for fans of these games. Unfortunately, this edition is sold out but you may be able to get them from CastleMania games. They are hoping to have copies to sell in January 2021. You can sign up on their site to be notified when they are available to order.

Thanks again to Retro-Bit for sending this in for review.
