When Does Original Hardware Stop Being Original

With so many new ways to preserve optical drives, when does replacing components on original hardware cause you to not be playing on original hardware. Also will these mods cause original intact hardware to be in short supply someday?

Example, GDMU for Dreamcast. Requires modding of power supply (or fully replacing of). Also can replace the original fan and add HDMI out on the system. Also see Terraonion MODE - Dreamcast & Saturn
