I’m not going to lie. When I first got the package and opened it up, my first thought was “Is this tiny book really it?” This book is small. I don’t mean in pages or even info; I mean in footprint. It’s tiny and cute and I love it. It’s easy to take on a trip and read, it's hardcover and 224 pages jam packed with pictures and info on games and gaming systems from Atari to Xbox, including handhelds and gaming PC’s.
What’s great about this book is not only does it cover home consoles, but it covers PC’s like Apple II and Commodore 64. Each system has a brief history, along with a fact sheet. Peter also includes for each system a Must See, Must play and Must Avoid game, with a short explanation. The info and layout is fantastic. The book isn't flashy with thick heavy glossed pages or super high rez pictures of gameplay or the consoles, but it doesn’t have to be. This book is simply a love letter to the history of gaming.
Overall, I love this book. From its small form factor to all the info jammed into it. If you have watched any of Peter’s YouTube videos you know his knowledge of video game history is second to none and this book shows it. This book is a must have for video game historians, as well as lovers of video games.
Thanks to Peter Leigh and Ilex Press for providing a copy for review.
