Obey Me from Blowfish Studios has some interesting gameplay elements and is perfectly setup for couch co-op. The biggest question is there enough content to keep gamers interested? Or will this become a button mashing combo fest?
Obey Me is a top down 3D brawler. Players are dropped into the role of Venessa Held, a soul huntress who has a K9 sidekick known as Monty. They are off to hunt demons and take care of evil. Monty is a talking hellhound who provides comic relief. A 2nd player can join in and play as Monty. Most of Vanessa’s attacks are combo based and she can take down enemies quickly.
Fill up the combo gauge and Monty and Vanessa can unleash special attacks. Players collect crystals for upgrading her and Monty’s skills. The skill trees offer some interesting options. Vanessa's primary weapons are daggers but she can unlock other weapons as she progresses.
The theme of the game is hell based. Lots of interesting effects and enemies, there is some light puzzle and traps section that help breakup the brawling pieces of the game. The sound effects, light music and humor help to move the game along and keep it interesting.
The controls are pretty well done, I didn't have a lot of issues getting Vanessa to attack and dodge. I did run into a few hiccups where I got stuck in the environment. The banter between the two characters gets a little stale as the game goes on. I wish there was a little more to the story but for the most part I enjoyed my time with the game.
Thanks for the publisher for letting us review the game.
