The mid to late 1990s are back. FPS games are king and our stock of Mt. Dew is on the rise. Wrath Aeon of Ruin is another retro themed FPS game that is published by 3D Realms. The Gamers Lounge has spent some time with this FPS and has some good things to say.
Ion Fury was a fun game from 3D Realms last year, and Wrath is more of that. KillPixel has done a great job of re-creating the 1990s FPS look. The game reminded me of Quake 1 and 2 with a mix of Hexen in it, as gamers start in an area with multiple portals to different levels.
There is no regenerating health or a cover system. There are no dialogue and cutscenes to bog the game down. This an old school FPS at its finest. Players will be flipping switches and hunting down keys. Enemies start out small, slow moving zombies players can hack down with your melee attack. Eventually players run into monsters with cyst grenades, soldiers with blade arms and a shotgun, hovering pink enemies and these multi eyed monsters that lob stuff at you.
All enemies can be destroyed via run and gun, just keep moving and firing. Scattered around the levels is ammo, bits or armor and weapons. Secrets to be discovered, don’t get me wrong jf players die you can respawn at the land or portals or the beginning of the level. I discovered that there is also a quick save system that you can use if you pick up skull icons. This was a lifesaver. There are also fun items with an inventory system. Some of the items I personally enjoyed were the one which turns players’ enemies into, another lets gamers gain life by killing, and finally there is one which gives struggling players invincibility at the sacrifice of your health.
The music is upbeat and reminds me of games from the 90s. The sound effects are good. There is a nice creepy atmosphere which the sounds play off of. Although this is an early access build and players only get access to 2 levels and a handful of weapons. Updates are being released all the time with new content. This Doom/Quake inspired FPS is a lot of fun to play and there seems to be a lot of game there. Look for another review from us as the game is fully released. Thanks to the publisher for letting us preview this while the game is in early access.
