Sombrero: Spaghetti Western Mayhem Review
Sombrero is best defined as a fun co-op/multiplayer game. The game combines 2D platforming with intense western based action. While the game itself is small, there is enough that keeps it interesting in a genre full of similar titles.
At this time I was only able to test the couch co-op, but I can say it's fun. The title makes me think on all those Westerns with a young Clint Eastwood. There are several game modes available for up to 4 local players. These modes include deathmatch, loot, capture the flag and Banditos. Out of the two, Banditos and Loot were the most interesting. Loot tasks players with grabbing bags of money while shooting opponents. Banditos involves players borrowing an idol and holding it as long as possible.
There is a colorful cast of characters for gamers to choose from and the action is fast paced. The controls are simple gamers will have to move, jump and use the 2nd joystick to aim and shoot in any direction Powerups are scattered through the multi levels. Some of these include dynamite, knives, grinder, alien blasters, and several others. There are also environment hazards scattered through the game. Players will have to watch for these as well as other players. While playing this game I kept thinking of Knight Squad which is another fantastic fast paced multiplayer game. I also kept thinking of Towerfall. Either way this game is fun to play with other people.
The graphics remind me of Sunset Riders meets Lode Runner 2. This along with the music server as a compliment to the fast paced game play. I tried several times to get the online multiplayer to work but I wasn't able to find anyone to play with. But at least with the couch multiplayer that I played with another person I found the game to be fast paced and enjoyable. The game is available via Steam for $14.99. The game was provided by the publisher for review.
Final thoughts, Sombrero: Spaghetti Western Mayhem is fun and it does a little to stand out amongst the other games like it but for $14.99 it's a hard sell. If you are a gamer that has a lot of friends over, and you have something set up like the Steam link then this is a game that you could have a lot of fun with. I wish there were more game modes or bots, either of those options would have made the game more appealing and easier sell at $14.99. The promise of free DLC is a nice touch though.
Final score 3.5/5
