Puzzle games are often overlooked and passed over.. But Unwording is something that should catch gamers’ attention. One part puzzle, and one part adventure, this game has a little bit of everything even if it's on the shorter side of things.
Unwording stars Tom and players are going to guide him through the day. The idea of the game is to showcase depression in an average individual. Most of the gameplay has players guiding Tom and clicking on objects in the game. These objects usually with text present a set of blocks with letters that players can manipulate to showcase Tom’s thoughts with the phrase players say.
Here is a good example: Tom sees a nice car. Players need to assemble the letters to say I can’t afford that. Players can use the space bar to show more of Tom’s thoughts about the object.. The blocks with letters can be rotated and flipped. They change colors as the players get closer to guessing the word. There are also hints blocks which players can use to fill in pieces of the phrase. The harder difficulty gets rid of a lot of hints.
The game is mostly 2d but there is an interesting 3d twist later. The game’s 2d artwork is easy to look at and has a pastel/easy on the eyes style. The music in the background serves the game well. As players progress there are opportunities for Tom to shine and grow. There isn't very much left to say about the game. It's a little on the short side, but for $5 it's an interesting concept that’s worth a play.
