Retro-Bit Sega Genesis and Saturn Bluetooth Controllers Review
Manufacturer: Retro-bit
Price: $29.99
Release Date: November 2019
Growing up, I was always a Sega man. In my opinion the Genesis controller is one of the best controllers. When I heard that Retro-Bit was releasing official licensed Sega controllers I was skeptical. I had never used their products and I worried about quality. Once the wired versions were released I bought them to install the 8bitdo DIY wireless kits for original Genesis and Saturn controllers. What I loved about the controllers is they are 1:1 facsimile to the original Sega controllers; this got me very excited to get my hands on the wireless versions. Retro-Bit was kind enough to send the Genesis and Saturn Bluetooth controllers in for review and I can confidently say these controllers are fantastic.
First off, let’s talk about the packaging. The packaging for these controllers are some of the highest quality out there. The art style is just like the original that was released 30 years ago. The box is made so well that the controller can be stored in the box. Included are instructions and a USB cable for charging. You will want to keep the instructions near if you are going to use the controllers on multiple systems because there are different ways to pair it to the various systems that they are compatible with and they are compatible with a lot of different systems: Steam, PC/Mac, Android, Switch, PS3, Fire TV and more.
Overall, the build quality is excellent. Right off the bat these will feel exactly like the original controllers with one difference, the weight. They are heavier because they have rumble motors in them. While I really like the extra weight, I'm not a fan of the rumble. When you play a game that supports rumble the motors are very strong. As in, rattle the controller strong. It's a little distracting, but rumble can be turned off in the game you are playing so this is a minor gripe. Battery life is very good as well; around 20 hours of playtime and it can be used wired while charging, as well.
Overall, both of these controllers are excellent. If you are looking for a controller to play classic games on PC, Raspberry Pi or your favorite retro games on the Switch, you can’t go wrong with these. You could use them to play newer games, but you have to remember that buttons may not match up and you might have to set the D-pad to the analog stick (it’s a simple button combination). Button and D-pad feel great with zero lag. I have the 8bitdo retro receiver for the Sega Genesis but unfortunately, these will not pair with it. Retro-Bit will be selling retro receivers for both Genesis and Saturn very soon. Hopefully I will get these in for review and I can amend this review and add those.
Pros:
Feel just like the originals
Battery Life is excellent
Price is right at $30
Cons
Rumble motors are a little strong
